Inscription: Inscribed in black felt pen across upper verso: 'YOUNG NICKS HEAD FROM A DC9 AT NIGHT / JULIAN DASHPER 1987'. Cat. Note/Ref.: MORE magazine July 1987 / 'New work at Room 11, Auckland's latest dealer gallery in His Majesty's Arcade, contains his reflections of the New Zealand landscape. A major painting in the exhibition is Young Nick's Head, painted after a visit to East Cape with friend and photographer Peter Hannken during the summer. He was amazed at Captain Cook's audacity: "He came here and labelled this country after everything from the cabin boy to the ship's cat." This multi panelled work is about Dashper's reflections on his cultural heritage, mixed with a sense of beauty and discovery of place which still dominates our experience. Dashper's paintings are never difficult to enjoy, even if one is not convinced by use of mirrors, velvets and old pillow cases as ground. They all reflect a sense of vitality, colour, life, light and rich surface texture. Succulent swoops of colour and one imbued with the sheer delight of placing paint on a surface.' - Rosemary Hemmings. Framed.
